Starting the Hiring Process

We’re stepping into a market post pandemic and it’s more complicated than it was before. There’s a greater demand for active and passive candidates and hiring great talent is harder than before and potentially more expensive.

Post pandemic candidates expectations and drivers have changed and they don’t show any sign of going back. The landscape has shifted and many businesses don’t know how to present themselves in the right light to attract great talent.

In the same way that companies have modernised and pivoted through the pandemic so have hiring processes. Companies have changed their talent attraction to evolve in line with the market demands offering a more efficient and attractive way to secure the best talent.

One of the mistakes companies often make without realising is that they simply replace a leaver’s role like for like. Too often hiring is done reactively rather than strategically which is understandable because you’re busy but taking a moment to really evaluate the next reiteration of the role can be useful. If you don’t then you could easily miss an opportunity to bring in new skill sets and evolve the role in line with your business evolution.

Some of the questions that you can ask

  1. Can I do a thorough and open exit interview? This isn’t always possible, for many people they don’t even think about doing an exit interview, or they might ask the wrong person to conduct it.

  2. What competencies are required to be successful in the role? Do they need to have great communication skills, do they need to have incredible attention to detail? How are you going to test these competencies?

  3. What should I be paying someone to do this job? Some market research is going to make sure that you’re offering a competitive salary and you’re going to attract the talent that you’re looking for.

  4. How will this role develop in the next few years? Where is the business going? What skills would be useful to bring into the business or can we rework the job in preparation for this next phase of our business life.

Asking these questions and including your team in the process will give you the greatest chance of success in your hiring process.
